Vietnam steps up tobacco control efforts

The Vietnamese government has taken a number of measures in recent years to increase tobacco control efforts.

Smoking rates are high in Vietnam, especially among men. Vietnam is one of the countries in ASEAN with lower tax rates on tobacco products, only higher than Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, and far lower than tax rates in developed countries. Currently, Vietnam prohibits the import and sale of new tobacco products. WHO recommends that Vietnam maintain its ban on the import and sale of new tobacco products and increase its crackdown on smuggled tobacco products.
