A corporate accountability group is urging Nigeria to investigate the Export Expansion Grants (EEG) awarded to tobacco companies by previous governments, Daily Trust reports.
The Export Expansion Grant is a post-shipment incentive designed to encourage local businesses to expand the volume and value of their exports.
Corporate Accountability and Public Participation in Africa (CAPPA) issued the call on December 1 after the Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Tax Reform and Fiscal Policy said Nigeria’s administration of tax relief fell short of prudence and transparency.
CAPPA Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi said, "We demand a full and transparent investigation into these unjust exemptions that deprive the country of revenue. More importantly, we are concerned about the benefits given to the tobacco industry under the Export Expansion Subsidy Scheme, as well as other unfavorable agreements, which The agreement is an insult to every Nigerian working to build a healthier and fairer society.”
