To help curb demand among young people while making the entire industry safer, Juul Labs wants to introduce stricter e-cigarette regulations.
In a recent open letter to the Florida House and Senate, the company urged lawmakers to support proposed legislation to regulate the market for legal nicotine vaping products in Florida.
The pending proposal would require state regulators to develop a list of certified manufacturers of nicotine products and a directory of certified nicotine products. According to the Florida Senate, these include inspections or audits of dealers of retail and wholesale nicotine products; prohibiting the sale, transportation, or distribution of certain nicotine products in the state; establishing criminal penalties; and requiring entities seeking to sell nicotine products or dispensing devices to obtain A wholesale dealer license for nicotine products; provides that license holders must consent to inspections and searches without a warrant; and provides for the seizure and destruction of illegal nicotine products.
According to media reports, Juul Labs said in the letter that its mission is to "switch the world's one billion adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes, eliminate their use, and combat the use of our products by minors."
The letter highlights the company's extensive efforts to ensure product quality and compliance with regulatory standards. The letter also highlights significant investments in product development, regulatory science and manufacturing quality control.
The letter was written by Jennifer Cunningham, Juul Labs’ regional director of state government affairs. The letter states that the company wants a better regulated market. Cunningham cited measures implemented by Juul Labs, including supporting "Tobacco 21" laws that would raise the legal sales age for tobacco products to 21, limit e-cigarette flavors to tobacco and menthol, and limit products per transaction. purchases, and promote compliance for retail partners through identity checks and technological advancements.
However, despite these efforts, the letter points out the challenges posed by the booming illegal vaping market in Florida, the state's leading destination for illegal vaping product sales in the United States. E-cigarette manufacturers have also expressed a willingness to assist Florida lawmakers in developing policies that promote a well-regulated market for legal vaping products.
