The Swiss National Council said it intends to continue to allow tobacco advertising in newspapers and magazines aimed at adults, according to a report in Swiss newspaper Jungfrau Zeitung on January 20. The decision contrasts with the stance of the upper house of parliament on strict enforcement of the tobacco advertising ban.
In the 2022 referendum, it is clearly stated that tobacco advertising, e-cigarette advertising and other nicotine product advertising must not involve children and young people. However, the National Council for Social Security and Health (SGK-N) is of the opinion that newspapers and magazines sold through subscriptions can still publish tobacco advertisements as long as at least 95% of their readers are adults.
The view was announced by the parliamentary service last Friday but failed to pass in the upper house of parliament.
