Recent rains in Zimbabwe trigger tobacco planting boom

According to a recent report by the Herald, recent rainfall in Zimbabwe has promoted the development of the tobacco planting industry. The tobacco planting area in Zimbabwe in the 2023-2024 planting season may reach or exceed the target of 148,500 hectares.

Data from the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board of Zimbabwe (TIMB) show that Zimbabwe encountered dry weather at the beginning of the 2023-2024 planting season. As of December 15, 2023, the tobacco leaf planting area in Zimbabwe was 55,170 hectares, a year-on-year decrease of 27%. However, recent rainfall has triggered a tobacco planting boom, and tobacco planting area is expected to increase significantly. Zimbabwe Tobacco Growers Association chairman George Seremwe and Tobacco Association chief executive Rodney Ambrose are both optimistic about reaching planting targets this season.
