Mozambique’s tobacco exports drop 25%

The "Mozambique Club" reported that in the first nine months of 2023, Mozambique's tobacco exports fell by 25% year-on-year to US$49.4 million.

According to a statistical report from the Bank of Mozambique, tobacco exports in the first three quarters (January to September) of 2023 were US$49.4 million. In the first three quarters of 2022, this figure was $66.4 million.

Mozambique is the eighth largest tobacco-growing region in the world, according to a World Health Organization report. With a cultivated area of 91,469 hectares, Mozambique is the third largest tobacco-growing country in Africa, after Zimbabwe (112,770 hectares) and Malawi (100,962 hectares).

The World Health Organization's report lists the 50 countries with the largest tobacco cultivation areas. Brazil and Mozambique are the Portuguese-speaking countries with the third largest tobacco cultivation area in the world (357,230 hectares).
