Malawi strives to become southern Africa's leading tobacco producer

Joseph Chidanti-Malunga, chairman of the Malawi Tobacco Commission, said Malawi aims to produce at least 200 million kilograms of tobacco leaves per year. Tobacco is Malawi's main cash crop. Its annual contribution to Malawi's foreign exchange is about 60%, and its economic contribution to Malawi is about 15%. It directly and indirectly provides jobs for millions of people in the country. . Last year, Malawi sold 120 million kilograms of tobacco leaves and earned US$282.61 million in revenue. The average selling price of tobacco leaves was US$2.35 per kilogram.
