According to the Jakarta Times report on January 9, Agus Dwi Susanto, chairman of the Indonesian Pulmonary Specialists Association, reminded the public that the general public has serious misunderstandings about e-cigarettes.
A 2021 study found that 17.2% of 937 respondents in Jakarta chose to use e-cigarettes because of the taste, another 3.4% chose to use them because of the special effects of smoke, and 1.7% because of the following Popular trends in the use of e-cigarettes.
Agus Devi Susanto pointed out, "Many people mistakenly believe that e-cigarettes have lower nicotine content and can be used as smoking cessation or alternative therapy. This number is as high as 76.7%." He said on Tuesday, January 9, 2024 . In addition, a 2019 study of 104 students at an Indonesian university found that most respondents held positive views on the definition, ingredients, pros and cons of e-cigarettes. But Susanto believes that e-cigarettes are actually the same as traditional cigarettes and contain harmful substances to the body.
He explained in detail that whether they are traditional cigarettes or e-cigarettes, they also contain substances that are addictive, highly irritating, and can cause inflammatory reactions.
E-cigarettes also contain nicotine, carcinogens and other irritating toxic substances, although the smoke of e-cigarettes does not contain carbon monoxide (CO) and tar (TAR). According to Mr. Susanto, e-cigarettes contain some nicotine that may be addictive, nitrosamines that may be carcinogenic, and glycerin or ethylene glycol components that may cause respiratory tract and lung irritation.
