British American Tobacco Nigeria fined US$110 million

Recently, British American Tobacco Nigeria was fined US$110 million by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) of Nigeria for allegedly abusing its market dominance and violating public health regulations. This is the largest fine ever issued by the FCCPC and is not appealable.

The FCCPC has launched an investigation into British American Tobacco Nigeria since 2020, investigating and collecting evidence from multiple service providers. The FCCPC said British American Tobacco Nigeria penalized retailers simply because they provided an equal platform to its competitors' products. The FCCPC will monitor the company for 24 months to ensure that it complies with relevant laws on market competition.
